Tell me you're an evil empire without saying the words "I'm an evil empire"

TECHNOLOGY

The lack of accessible magicite and relative weakness of æthercite left Saronia unable to compete with the rest of the world on the front of magical development. However, they made up for this by developing into a nation of steam and steel. First by burning their own trees, then later coal. But it was a recent development that truly allowed them to step up to the international community; Deifaced Æthercite. Forgemaster of the Saronian Ironworks Otto von Neumann, after getting his hands on the petrified body of an eidolon, found that he could use the body to grow æthercite that contained the eidolon's phantom. Each shard of crystal grown slowly killing the eidolon, but providing ætherite more powerful than natural magicite of the same size. With this new power source, he was able to expand their technology and infuse individuals with artificial magical ability.

Beyond the skies over Mitron, Saronia Prime, and Vector no longer being choked by clouds of smoke, the biggest changes to the empire were found in the military. Particularly in the formation of the magitek knights and their elite mechanized cavalry. Magitek knights are warriors given artificial magical ability via infusions of deifaced æthercite directly into their blood. The magitek elites pilot powerful machines that both protect the pilot and bring mighty magical attacks to bear.

As noted above deifaced æthercite is created via the petrifaction of eidolons and growing the crystals on their bodies. While the exact number of eidolons captured is unknown, reports tell of hundreds of fairies and dozens of summoned chocobos, the guard dog of the feymarch Garm, and at least two warrior-like eidolons. One with a set of great horns and another with four sword-wielding arms, presumed to be Maduin and Ravana by the summoners of Myst.
