Magic-Users!
This thread gets posted time and time again on /tg/ about what terms do you use for various magic-users and the like so I thought I'd sit down and right out the variety of jargons for mages in my own pulp-fantasy worldbuilding project (the one run with 10D6/dungeonpunk, not BX D&D).
And if you're one of those loons who shits on worldbuilding all the time as a distraction, suck eggs. You're wrong and your games are bad.
Magic-User
Anyone who uses magic as their trade. If you use magic, you are a magic-user.
Mage
A term magic-users use to refer to themselves in a casual sense, often prefixed or suffixed with a description of what they do. Life mages are magical physicians, Fire mages throw fireballs, Death mages futz with the powers of life and death, magewrights make minor magical trinkets.
The only exception is Potion-makers, they don't identify as mages normally.
Specialties
Abjurer, Pyromancer, Necromancer, Artificers, etc. Within the academic circles of sorcery, these terms are used instead of x-mage for the various types of mage out there.
Potion-makers are called Alchemists.
Saint, Sorcerer, Wilder
There are three ways to interact with magic. It is granted to you by a higher power, you learn how to work magic through an understanding, or you're just born with it.
Saints: Saints are granted their power by gods, demons, and other things on that same level. Saints rarely need to learn the science of sorcery, but those who do are better mages.
Sorcerer: Sorcery is the "science" of magic-use, and those whose magical ability comes only from sorcery are called sorcerers.
Wilder: For one reason or another some folks are just born with it, and those are wilders. Most do need to learn a bit of sorcery so their magic doesn't go haywire, but they're still able to use magic.
Warlock
The term may be used for any evil magic-user, but magic-users themselves use it for criminal mages who were formerly a part of a magical colleges. They tend to require an oath to never use your magic for unlawful or evil acts.
Hedge Mage
Any magic-user who is not associated with the colleges of magic.
Witch
There are a lot of female hermit mages. They're often called witches by the locals because they're scary.
Wizard
Anyone who is wise and learned. It's a title you earn from years and years of magic use and proven mastery over at least two fields of magic.
There, I think I covered them all.
